Case Study
In our second semester of clinic we were required to see a patient that needed full-mouth scaling and root planing. This was termed our case study patient. We did our typical procedures and data collection such as assessment, plaque index, oral hygiene instruction, and radiographs. With this patient I also did additional procedures such as intraoral photographs, bacterial microscope samples from a deep pocket, and nutritional counseling. Once this patient was finished we were required to create a presentation about our patient and their treatment. Proper documentation was a big part of this assignment. This presentation is attached below.
This process taught me what a complex patient treatment plan would look like. I learned how my patients medications, habits, and diet could effect his oral health and provided him with the tools to make needed changes. I also got to see the effect my treatment was having after the fact. I learned how rewarding it could be to see the results of my hard work. It was important that I saw a complex patient to truly understand what I may encounter once out in the real world.
Also attached below is a pharmacology case study that we completed to show what oral side effects can come with certain medications. It is important for dental professionals to understand these connections.
